Fast cars, girls love them and boys crave for them. Being the stylized image of all that is bad (which, of course, means good), powerful and testosterone-fuelled, cars have been a favourite toy for a lot of men (and quite a few women) since their invention.

What is it exactly that makes these beastly machines the target of such devotion and lust? What makes us look at machines that can make the fabric labels in our clothes disappear in the breeze with such awe and fascination? Perhaps it is all the unrestrained power waiting to be released by the tap of a foot, or perhaps the lush shapes and sensual curves of an attractive sports car.

What we do know for sure is that while most of us can only day-dream about riding behind the wheel of the fastest car in the world, some lucky fellows (who are liberal about how they spend their hard earned cash) will go to any length to taste that kind of speed and power. But how fast are the fastest cars in the world today? Better yet, which one is the king of speed, the prized target for adrenaline seekers around the world? Let’s find out with our top 3:

1. SSC Ultimate Aero

The top dog on our list has beaten the legendary Bugatti Veyron as the baddest, meanest and certainly fastest kid on the block. Boasting a max speed of 257 mph and shooting from 0 to 60 in the lighting fast speed of 2.7 seconds, it’s easy to be impressed with this bad boy.

The Ultimate Aero is eqipped with a Twin-Turbo V8 Engine with 1183 hp and will set you back (at least!) the modest sum of $654,400. If you are a fan of speed though, the SSC Ultimate Aero is the way to go. The car has been tested by the Guinness World Records and is guaranteed to tear away any apparel labels attached to your clothes and make your hair go back to the 80s.

2. Bugatti Veyron

Fast and light, the Bugatti is the second fastest but the most expensive. The Bugatti Veyron makes for more than a petty purchase with the base price of $1,700,000 (yes, that’s seven figures). The car has a maximum speed of 253 mph and goes from 0 to 60 in a measly 2.5 seconds which gives it a faster sprint than the Aero.

3. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo

It’s fast and it’s sexy. It’s the car you want to show off. The Saleen S7 boasts an Aluminum V8 Engine with 750 hp and is as smooth as a red panther. At a base price of $555,000 the car is the most affordable on the list but will have you settling with 3rd place in terms of speed, with a max of 248 mph.

Another day, another kit car for your toupee-tousling amusement. This is the Heynsdyk 2500SF from Holland: a bespoke body placed over the engine, electronics, and drivetrain of a Porsche 944. The substantially lighter body, in galvanized steel, takes weight down to 900 kilograms (1,980 pounds) while maintaining 50/50 weight distribution. There are six engine choices, from a basic 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 163 horsepower, to a 2.5-liter four-pot S-motor with a turbo. That one will get you 250 horsepower, and from 0 to 60 in six seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour).

You can buy the car as a kit or a finished product, and prices start at €14,750 ($20,798 U.S.) for the kit, or €36,995 ($52,158 U.S.) for a ready runner. Like its countrymate Spyker, what the car might lack in beauty it makes up for in unique and arresting looks. Have a look for yourselves in the gallery of high-res photos below. Hat tip to Anton!

Wouldn’t it be nice to select cars from an automaker’s fleet the way you select lobsters from a tank? Some, like King Juan Carlos of Spain, can do exactly that, and this is his latest lobster: a blackout-remixed Audi RS6 sedan. About the only things not given the midnight treatment are the headlights, taillights, and signal indicators on the mirrors. Even the exhaust tips are black.

A book last year alleged that the king owned 71 cars and had a team of 65 attendants to care for them. If true, this one makes a worthy 72nd. Somehow we don’t think the royal standards and light bars mounted behind the grille are normal Audi options – but we might ask next time we stop by the showroom. You can get a few more looks at it in the gallery of high-res photos below.

For the last few years Barrett-Jackson has become the place to sell “production firsts” like the Dodge Challenger, Corvette ZR1, and Shelby GT500 KR to name a few. For 2010, it seems we’ve run out of new muscle cars to auction off, but Cadillac decided to take advantage of a captive and wealthy audience to unload the very first production 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. We’d probably be more interested if it was a CTS-V Coupe, as we don’t see a run-of-the-mill two-door CTS becoming a collectible, regardless of when it was produced.

Still, we can’t fault Cadillac too much for bringing the first CTS Coupe to Barrett-Jackson, since all of the winning bid minus the cost of the car will be donated to the College for Creative Studies. The top bidder doesn’t get this exact car, but instead gets to special-order his or her own CTS Coupe with the choice of color, engine, transmission, trim, and any options. So what’s it worth? The car sold yesterday for a respectable price of $95,700 including buyers commission.

Some of you loved it and others instantly objected to everything from the looks of the car to the $33,995 price tag that doesn’t include the base car. With 500 horsepower from the new 5.0-liter V8, there’s no arguing that the 2011 GT350 has plenty of performance potential, but is another $60,000+ Mustang what people really want?

The first thing we did when we arrived in Scottsdale last night was to make a bee-line to check out the car in person. We also caught up with Jim Owens, Shelby’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications, who talked to us about the car. Follow the jump for what we learned about the 2011 GT350.

The Jaguar XJ is is a near clean-sheet design for the 2011 model year with all-new sheet metal, interior bits and powertrains. All that change leads to a new price tag when the biggest cat hits UK dealerships this April, and the MSRP ranges wildly depending on what you’re looking for. UK site Autocar reports that the XJ will range from £53,775 ($86,741 in U.S. funds, though that’s not directly comparable) for the 3.0 diesel Luxury model to £90,455 ($145,638 U.S.) for the “base” 5.0 Supersport LWB. Those prices will climb based on the options chosen, and we’re sure plenty of models will crest the £100,000 mark. The middling XJ 5.0 V8 Premium Luxury comes in at £64,355 ($103,579 U.S).

Jaguar will reportedly sell three different versions of the XJ, with powertrain options ranging from five versions of the 3.0-liter diesel model to four versions with the petrol-powered 5.0-liter V8 and finally two different supercharged 5.0-liter Supersport models. All models will reportedly be available with both standard and long wheelbases, with the longer Jags coming with a £3,000 price premium.

Keep in mind that UK pricing very often has very little to do with the XJ MSRP we’re likely to see here in the U.S. due to the much higher value of the British Pound versus the U.S. dollar and the UK’s wonky Value Added Tax. In other words, don’t read much into the pricing unless you live on a very large island just north of mainland Europe. Head over to Autocar to see cross-pond pricing for all ‘11 XJ models.

Harley-Davidson has just announced a new addition to its entry-level Sportster family, and it’s seemingly again drawing on its years of heritage in both the bike’s design and name. Called the Forty-Eight, the new machine is the latest motorcycle to slot into HD’s Dark Custom series, which also includes the Nightster 1200, Iron 883, Cross Bones, Fat Bob and Street Bob.

So, what makes this model different from the other Sportster models? It’s all in the styling details, naturally. Included in the kit are bobbed fenders front and rear, fat front tire, blacked-out and polished 1200cc Evolution V-twin, solo seat that measures 26 inches from the ground, under-mounted mirrors, side mount license plate and tiny 2.1-gallon peanut fuel tank. No matter, with what we bet is less than two inches of rear suspension travel, this bike seems destined to be a short-distance mount anyway.

So, to recap, there’s nothing new here at all (which we surmise is kind of the point), but the overall effect still makes the Forty-Eight arguably the most attractive bike in the Sportster line, barring the much sportier XR1200, of course. Pricing begins at $10,499 MSRP in Vivid Black with Brilliant Silver and Mirage Orange Pearl also available. Click past the break for the complete press release and check out our high-res image gallery below.

A November Nor’Easter had chewed its way up to New England, delivering a cataclysmic combination of rain and wind as we headed out on a late-night errand. Normally, such a prospect requires a potent blend of Italian roast and Krank20 to stay hyper alert. Instead, behind the helm of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic, the going was serene and confident. In a word: Wow.

These moments of vehicular astonishment have thinned out in the last two decades. Just look around at the automotive landscape. Even more modest conveyances are kitted out like luxury cars of yore, packing tons of tech and safety features that were once the exclusive purview of the world’s well-to-do. Can anything be impressive anymore? As a matter of fact, yes. The E350, as it strafed along the pavement, solid as granite and ready for anything, made us feel like true kaisers of the strasse. Horsepower-addicted auto reviewers have complained that the 3.5-liter V6 needs more spinach. Fine. You want speed, spring for the AMG E63 and shut up. But for the above-average family man, the E350 manages to transcend its asthmatic lungs, soft-spoken tiller and supple feet to foment serious respect, if not outright desire.

Mahindra has had its fair share of issues and delays in bringing its TR20 and TR40 diesel-powered compact pickup trucks to market here in the United States, but it seems that experience hasn’t turned the Indian automaker off from a planned launch of its Scorpio SUV in America by the end of this year.

Considering the short timetable, we would imagine the U.S.-bound Scorpio wouldn’t differ too greatly from the model that’s available in other parts of the world, but Inside Line reports (without offering sources) that a new unibody version is in the works that could replace the body-on-frame design used at present.

We’d have to assume that the U.S. version of the Scorpio would share the TR’s 2.2-liter four cylinder diesel engine – which in pickup duty is expected to return 30 miles per gallon and tow up to 1.3 tons – and that it would offer similar fuel efficient benefits wrapped in a SUV wrapper.
